Community News Update - September 4th

Published on September 4, 2020

Dear Community,

Yesterday, I was joined on a tour of Toronto-St. Paul’s by the Leader of the Ontario NDP, Andrea Horwath. Since COVID-19 struck our community, we have seen the true resiliency of our neighbourhood, as we have banded together as one to battle a once in a lifetime challenge. I was deeply honoured to show Andrea Horwath that spirit throughout her visit.

We started the day just outside Winona Drive Senior Public School, where we held a press conference about the governments proposed reopening plan, and its many flaws. From collapsing classrooms to have larger numbers of students, to the lack of mandatory paid sick days in Ontario, we covered a lot of ground in our conversations about the plan. It was especially powerful to hear from a local parent, Beverley Eadie, about her thoughts and feelings on the plan. To see coverage of the press conference, you can click here.

Next we traveled to Little Jamaica, at Oakwood and Eglinton, where I was thrilled to be able to award Vernal Small with a certificate of recognition for his more than 40 years of work in our community. For those who don’t know, Vernal is the owner of Jamall Caribbean Custom Tailor, and has been keeping our community looking sharp for decades. After that, we stopped in at Randy’s for some patties, and visited a number of the local Black owned businesses in the area.

After our trip to Eglinton West, we stopped in at the Duke of Kent for lunch, before making our way to the special Community Food Table that we were able to set up on a Thursday with about 30 (physically distanced) volunteers joining us. I was very excited to show Andrea this incredible project that was the brainchild of Joanne Vannicola and has now grown to four locations that operate weekly across the riding. I took this opportunity to recognize many of our volunteers with certificates for their hard work, before Andrea and I ended our day at Aviv.

I want to send a special thank you to all the local volunteers and businesses that made the day such a success.

Next, as we enter the Labour Day weekend, it’s important that we acknowledge the continuing upward trend of COVID-19 cases in Ontario. Today we’ve seen 148 new cases, and if the trend continues we could be seeing more than 200 a day soon. It’s vital that we stay vigilant in this fight against COVID-19, and that means that we need to be keeping as cautious as possible – washing our hands as often as possible, wearing our masks in public (over the mouth and nose), and staying true to our social bubbles of 10.

Finally today, I want to send out a quick flag that we’re going to be holding off on the Community Food Tables for tomorrow (with the exception of the Food Table in Marian Engel Park), as we take a break for the Labour Day long weekend – however we will be back again next Saturday with another full edition of the tables!

In Solidarity,
