Community News Update - September 11th

Published on September 11, 2020

Dear Community,

As we reach the end of this shortened week, we are once again seeing COVID-19 cases on the rise in Ontario. For the first time in almost two months, we’ve seen more than 200 new COVID-19 cases in a day. This follows the trend that we have been seeing for the last few weeks of our case numbers slowly creeping upwards. While we haven’t seen the explosive growth that we saw at the onset of the pandemic, this is still a stark reminder that we all need to remain incredibly vigilant in our battle with COVID-19.

Around the world, we are seeing the case numbers once again rising, and in some jurisdictions, they have had to reimplement previously lifted restrictions in their communities. While my hope remains that this does not become necessary here, at the current rate of growth it likely will be. So with that in mind, I repeat the same refrain, let’s keep washing our hands as often as possible, please only break physical distancing barriers with the 10 people in your bubble, and please wear your mask while you’re in public. Masks are a truly vital part of our battle with COVID-19, and it is crucial that we are all wearing our masks when we need to.

Next week, the Ontario Legislature will return to sitting. Today, in advance of that return, Andrea Horwath laid out the Ontario NDP’s priorities for the coming fall session. Central to our focus will be fighting smaller, safer classes, an overhaul of the long-term care system in Ontario, and a plan to create more stable, well-paying jobs. Amid COVID-19, I think that these three priorities will be key to ensuring that we’re able to learn the lessons of this pandemic, and return a safer, more stable society. And while these are our three main priorities, we will of course to continue to also push for a bevy of other issues, as well, and if there is something you want to see me address in the legislature, please do not hesitate to reach out to my office at JAndrew-CO@ndp.on.ca.

Finally today, our Community Food Tables will be returning tomorrow for another session. All four tables will be open around Toronto-St. Paul’s, and if you are interested in picking up food or dropping some off, make sure to come by. For a full set of details on locations and timings of the tables, please just scroll down in this email!

I hope you have a safe and happy weekend!

In solidarity,
