Official Opposition Leader Andrea Horwath names NDP deputy leaders, critics
NDP team draws on diversity and experience to make life better for Ontario families
QUEEN’S PARK – Official Opposition Leader Andrea Horwath announced the NDP’s new critic roles on Thursday.
“Something special started this summer as millions of Ontarians rejected cuts and tactics that sought to divide us,” said Horwath. “They voted for a vision of hope and positive change, and elected a record number of New Democrat MPPs to deal with the daily challenges facing families, from access to mental health supports, to quality education and an increasing cost of living.
“Each of our MPPs brings a unique perspective to the team, and everyone has a role in helping to resolve the challenges facing the people of Ontario. We’re ready to keep fighting for families and for the services they count on to build a great life.”
Horwath’s NDP made historic breakthroughs in 2018 as Ontarians elected the largest official opposition in a generation, made up of 40 MPPs from every corner of the province.
Rather than matching critic portfolios directly to government ministers, Horwath assigned each member of her team to focus on the real needs and concerns of families across Ontario, like mental health and addictions, housing affordability and economic development.
Timiskaming—Cochrane MPP John Vanthof and Brampton Centre MPP Sara Singh will both serve as deputy leaders within the NDP Caucus.
“John is a seasoned legislator with a proven track record of delivering for rural Ontario. He will help us connect with people living in small town Ontario,” said Horwath. “Sara is a passionate GTA advocate who brings a new, fresh voice to the team. She will help us to continue connecting with communities in the 905.
“I’m confident in our team’s ability to fight for families and businesses. We’re building on our success during the last election and bringing people together to stop Doug Ford. Together we’ll build a solid new foundation for the NDP and give families hope for a brighter future.”
