Community News Update - October 16th

Published on October 16, 2020

Dear Community,

This morning, Ontario reported another 712 COVID-19 cases, and seven new deaths.

As we enter this weekend, we need to maintain our caution, keep our physical distance from one another, wear our masks, and limit our contact with other people as much as possible. I know that it’s a difficult time right now for everyone, with the prolonged isolation weighing heavy.

With that said, I’d be remiss to not also say this.

You deserve self-care, and I encourage you to take some time to take your mind off the pandemic, watching your favourite movie, listening to some great music, or whatever else it is that helps you relax.

You deserve it.

Today, I was thrilled to attend the ground-breaking ceremony for the extensive renovations that are taking place at the NIA Centre for the Arts! The building is being completely renovated, and soon they will be operating the very first professional multidisciplinary Black Arts Centre in Canada. I could not be prouder to have this space located in our community, and I want to thank the whole team at the NIA Centre for all their hard work to bring this project to life. It is going to be incredibly exciting to see what lies in the future for the NIA Centre!

A few weeks ago, we were forced to suspend our Community Food Table program due to the resurgence of the COVID-19 pandemic in Toronto.

However, the need for food in our community has not been suspended, and I am acutely aware that those who we were providing food are still in need. In response to this, I am working on developing a program to drop food off in our community.

If you are interested in participating in this program, you can sign up here!

Finally, I’m excited to share that on Tuesday next week I will be participating in a panel being organized by the incredible team at Skills for Change!

The conversation will centre on the impact of COVID-19 on women in Ontario. We know that since the pandemic struck that the impacts have been disproportionately felt by women, and we will be seeking unpack why that has been the case, and what we can do to ensure that the recovery that lies ahead doesn’t leave women behind. Stay tuned to the Monday update – when I’ll provide a link to watch the stream!

Have a great weekend!

In Solidarity,

Jill Andrew

PS: I will be bringing back the community arts section to my emails next week! If you have something that you'd like to submit, please email your submission to JAndrew-CO@ndp.on.ca
