Daily Update - Coronavirus - April 27, 2020

Published on April 27, 2020

Dear Community,

We've made it through another day.  Our community has done an incredible job throughout this tumultuous time. If you’ve been feeling down or stressed out – try to remember that you are stronger than you think – and that you’re going to get through this.

And when some days feel particularly hard give yourself a break. Productivity is good but not at the expense of resting if that's what you need to do in order to 'reset.'

Today, has been a busy news day with an announcement from the government that they are putting together a re-opening plan for the province. This said, we need to be testing in a large-scale way in our communities and long-term care homes to have the most accurate levels of data where cases of COVID-19 are concerned and the government must make this information public. We also need the province to commit to race-based data collection.

Further, we need to make sure that the workplaces that are coming back online are doing so in a safe way. To do this, we need our government to mandate on site testing and inspections to make sure that our workplaces are safe across Ontario. We must learn from our mistakes and make this transition cautiously so that we don’t end up with another outbreak on our hands.

Frankly, to get this right on the first try, we’re going to need a more detailed framework than the one that was released today.

We also learned this weekend that schools in Ontario will remain closed until at least the end of May. I know for many people in our community, this news does not come as a surprise. But it does mean that we are now getting closer to the end of the school year – and it is vital that we see more planning and supports for students as we approach the summer break. I will be keeping a keen eye on this as it continues progress, and I would love for you to send me any feedback that you have regarding how COVID-19 has impacted your experience with our education system as parents, educators/education workers and students.

Since COVID-19 has struck our community, my office has been inundated with messages from the residents of Toronto-St. Paul’s asking how they can help. It’s been incredible to see my inbox fill up each day with supportive messages. I want to send a heartfelt thanks to everyone who is pitching in, to do what they can to make a real difference in the fight against COVID-19. I also want to send another reminder that it’s so important right now that we keep working together and doing everything we can to flatten the curve.

That means, staying inside as much as possible, washing our hands, and doing whatever we can to support those who are the most vulnerable in our community.

Finally, THANK YOU to everyone in Toronto-St. Paul's and frankly across the province who tuned in to our Tenants Town Hall this evening and a special thank you to our hosts  Sara Singh, Suze Morrison, Tele and Alejandro for joining!

In Solidarity,

Community Gardens Deemed Essential
Over the weekend, the province amended it's emergency order to allow community gardens to continue to operate as an essential source of fresh food. We are glad to see this change happen after the hard work from advocacy groups across the province! Another shout out to MPP Ian Arthur who sent a letter to the Ministry demanding this action.

Featured Art Submission

Lynne Campbell
In their own words:

This painting was inspired by our strength, hope, compassion and survival of the current Perfect Storm we are in. I called it “Rebirth” as it will be a different world or a new normal we will be embracing. Together we will make it through. Love to all. Be Safe and Stay Well. ❤️

This piece is on Canvas Board, 8” x 10”. It was painted by me today, April 16th, 2020, and photographed outside after drying in the sunlight.

I hope it makes you feel as hopeful as I did while creating it. 🙂
